It is time the state allows Landmark and Prime to proceed with this important lifesaving endeavor and to continue in their mission of “Saving Hospitals, Saving Jobs, Saving Lives.” The Health Services Council’s approval of Landmark’s trauma center application is a recognition of the tremendous need for such a facility, as well as an endorsement of Prime’s proven ability to deliver top quality health care. These attributes are embedded in all Prime initiatives - whether the project is a donation to improve health-care delivery in the community, a multi-million dollar trauma center or improving quality of care for all citizens. Prime has proven itself as a dedicated and concerned business leader in Rhode Island. The hallmarks of Prime Healthcare are integrity, quality and philanthropy.

More than 1,000 jobs were saved, and hundreds of heart attack patients have received life-saving care.
Since the acquisition, many services have been added for the community’s benefit, including state of the art technology, new patient units, a newly renovated cancer center, a wound care center and the recruitment of best in class physicians and nurses. Both hospitals were in the midst of a five-year bankruptcy when they were saved in 2013. Prime’s investment in Landmark and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island (RHRI) has been transformative. Economically, a project of this magnitude will also provide an influx of jobs and financial investment into the Rhode Island Community.Īnd this is just the latest example of Prime Healthcare’s indisputable commitment to the Rhode Island Community. Whether it is due to standard bureaucratic red tape or politics as usual, this delay impacts critical care in the most dire of medical circumstances. But as of this month the Department of Health has yet to provide final regulatory approval for Landmark to proceed with the work necessary to expand and operate this critical component of the healthcare safety net. Last June, the Department of Health’s Health Services Council, recognizing the need for such a facility in Northern Rhode Island, approved Prime’s application. That is exactly why Landmark Medical Center and parent company Prime Healthcare filed an application with the state to establish a second trauma center in Rhode Island. That shorter transit time and access to critical emergency services could be the difference between life and death.

Now imagine if there was a closer trauma center less than five miles away in Woonsocket. First responders would likely transport the most gravely injured to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence - the only trauma center in the state - nearly 18 miles and more than 20 minutes away. Imagine being in a horrific car accident on Route 146 perhaps somewhere near Forestdale.
